Overview
Trot ("we", "our", or "the app") is a step-tracking app with a virtual pet companion, built by Lambert Apps. This policy explains what data the app reads, where that data goes, and the choices you have.
Data we read on-device
Health and motion data
With your permission, Trot reads the following from Apple Health and the device's motion sensors:
- Step count
- Walking + running distance
- Flights climbed
- Active energy burned
- Exercise minutes (Apple Exercise Time)
- Live motion data for real-time step counting while the app is open
All of this is processed on your iPhone. We do not upload, transmit, or share your health data with any server, third party, or cloud service. We do not operate a backend that stores any of it.
On-device app data
Your goal, pet name, unit preferences, streak counters, and locally cached step history are stored in your iPhone's local storage. They never leave the device.
Data that leaves the device
Anonymous analytics (Mixpanel)
Trot uses Mixpanel to collect anonymous usage analytics so we can understand which features get used and where the app breaks. Events we track include:
- Screens viewed and buttons tapped (e.g., "paywall shown", "goal changed")
- Session length and frequency
- Which subscription plan you buy and whether a free trial was used
- Anonymous crash and hang counts (that a crash or hang occurred, plus the OS and app version) with no personal content. Detailed crash reports go through Firebase Crashlytics, described below.
- Device type, iOS version, and app version
Analytics events do not include your step count, distance, or any other Health or Fitness data, and never your name, email, or any other personally identifying information. They are tied to a random anonymous identifier generated on-device, not to your name or Apple ID.
Crash reports (Firebase Crashlytics)
When the app crashes, Firebase Crashlytics collects a crash report so we can find and fix the bug. A report includes the technical stack trace of the crash, your device model, iOS version, and app version. Crash reports are not tied to your name or Apple ID, and they never include Health data, your pet's name, or anything you typed in the app.
Advertising (Google AdMob, free tier only)
The free version of Trot displays ads through Google AdMob. Trot never requests the App Tracking Transparency permission, so it collects no advertising identifier (IDFA) and ads are not based on your activity in other apps. In regions that require consent, Google's consent form controls how ads may be selected. Google may use a device identifier to limit how often you see the same ad and to prevent fraud. Trot Pro subscribers do not see ads.
Subscriptions (Apple + RevenueCat)
Subscription purchases are processed by Apple's App Store and orchestrated through RevenueCat. We receive anonymized subscription state (active / cancelled / trial) and a transaction ID. We do not receive your name, payment details, or Apple ID.
Third-party services at a glance
- Apple HealthKit for on-device Health data access only.
- Apple StoreKit for subscription billing.
- Mixpanel for anonymous product analytics.
- Firebase Crashlytics for crash reporting.
- Google AdMob for ads in the free tier.
- RevenueCat for subscription state management.
Children's privacy
Trot is not directed at children under 13. The app does not require an account, does not request personal information, and stores all personal data locally.
Your rights
You can:
- Revoke Health and Motion permissions at any time in iOS Settings, under Privacy & Security.
- Cancel a subscription in iOS Settings. Tap your name, then Subscriptions.
- Uninstall the app to delete your pet, goal, history cache, and all other locally stored data.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the app evolves. Material changes will bump the "Last updated" date above and be noted in the app's release notes.
